Overview

During the summer of 2022, I had the opportunity to intern at Amazon. I was a part of the Operations organization, specifically on the Amazon Warehousing and Distribution team. Amazon Warehousing and Distribution offers various types of logistical and supply chain support to customers, such as providing inventory space in warehouses and transporting inventory from warehouses to fulfillment centers.

My intern project centered around a new service for enterprise customers who may be interested in using Amazon’s warehouse services. As the primary designer on the team, I was responsible for designing the new experience, and I worked closely with the Product Manager to define and prioritize the product features that would best serve the customers.

Key Takeaways

As the primary designer on the project, I owned the designs, and this gave me the opportunity to better understand the responsibilities of a UX designer, especially when working with product managers, UX researchers, and leadership. As the expert on the customer experience, it was my role to advocate for the user and balance user needs with business/product requirements to design a simple, frictionless experience for the customers. This internship also helped me improve my design thinking; I was always challenged by my manager and mentor to think more broadly and deeper with my design explorations and to always consider if the user experience can be further simplified.

Thank you, Amazon!

A huge thank you to the whole AWD design team, especially my manager, Luke Montgomery. I am so grateful to have the mentorship of these talented individuals, and I look forward to applying the skills I learned this summer to my future work.
